Getting Donations Into Tax Software

Several ways to get your DeductIt records into your tax return.

TurboTax Desktop (Tax Helper — Recommended)

The DeductIt Tax Helper is a free companion app that automates entering your donations directly into TurboTax Desktop. It fills in every field — charity names, addresses, amounts, dates, item descriptions, and more. Available for macOS and Windows.

  1. Go to Transfer to TurboTax
  2. Choose Desktop (Automated)
  3. Download the Tax Helper app if you haven't already
  4. Load the automation guide into the Tax Helper
  5. Open TurboTax to Charitable Donations and click Start

The Tax Helper handles all donation types including stock and mileage — no manual entry needed.

Requires Supporter tier or higher.

TurboTax Desktop (TXF Import — Alternative)

Alternatively, export a TXF file that TurboTax Desktop imports directly.

  1. Go to Import / Export / Print
  2. Select TurboTax Transfer
  3. Choose TurboTax Desktop
  4. Download the TXF file
  5. In TurboTax Desktop: File > Import > From TXF Files

TXF import covers cash and item donations only. Stock donations and mileage must be entered manually in TurboTax. Charity addresses also require manual entry after import.

TurboTax Online

TurboTax Online does not support file imports. Two options:

For the guided approach:

  1. Go to Import / Export / Print
  2. Select TurboTax Transfer

Tax Deduction Basics

Do I need to itemize to deduct donations?

For tax year 2025: generally yes. The standard deduction is $15,000 (single) / $30,000 (married filing jointly). You benefit from itemizing on your federal return only if your total deductions exceed those amounts. However, some states allow a charitable deduction even if you don't itemize on your federal return, so your donations may still reduce your state taxes.

Starting in tax year 2026: non-itemizers can also deduct a limited amount of cash donations — up to $1,000 (single) / $2,000 (married filing jointly) — without itemizing. This applies to cash gifts to public charities only; item, stock, and mileage donations remain deductible only if you itemize.

What organizations qualify?

The organization must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. DeductIt's Supporter-tier charity search verifies this for you.

What records do I need to keep?

What is fair market value (FMV)?

The price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller. For donated items, this typically means thrift store or resale value, not the original purchase price.

DeductIt includes FMV lookup for common items based on Salvation Army and Goodwill guidelines.

Can I deduct mileage for volunteer work?

Yes, at the IRS charitable mileage rate (currently 14 cents per mile). DeductIt tracks this automatically.

What about stock or securities donations?

What are the AGI limits?

Standard deduction vs. itemizing?

Track everything regardless. You won't know until year-end whether itemizing saves you more than the standard deduction. And starting in 2026, even non-itemizers can deduct up to $1,000 ($2,000 if married filing jointly) of cash donations, so tracking your cash giving pays off either way.
