Cash & Monetary Donations
- Checks, credit card, bank transfers, PayPal, Venmo, payroll deductions
- Keep your bank or credit card statement as backup documentation
Tap the + button, then select "Money Donation" to get started.
Item Donations
- Clothing, household goods, furniture, electronics, books, sporting goods
- Items must be in "good used condition or better" to be deductible
- Use DeductIt's built-in FMV lookup to find fair values for common items

Getting Donations Into Tax Software
Several ways to get your DeductIt records into your tax return.
TurboTax Desktop (Tax Helper — Recommended)
The DeductIt Tax Helper is a free companion app that automates entering your donations directly into TurboTax Desktop. It fills in every field — charity names, addresses, amounts, dates, item descriptions, and more. Available for macOS and Windows.
- Go to Transfer to TurboTax
- Choose Desktop (Automated)
- Download the Tax Helper app if you haven't already
- Load the automation guide into the Tax Helper
- Open TurboTax to Charitable Donations and click Start
The Tax Helper handles all donation types including stock and mileage — no manual entry needed.
Requires Supporter tier or higher.
TurboTax Desktop (TXF Import — Alternative)
Alternatively, export a TXF file that TurboTax Desktop imports directly.
- Go to Import / Export / Print
- Select TurboTax Transfer
- Choose TurboTax Desktop
- Download the TXF file
- In TurboTax Desktop: File > Import > From TXF Files
TXF import covers cash and item donations only. Stock donations and mileage must be entered manually in TurboTax. Charity addresses also require manual entry after import.
TurboTax Online
TurboTax Online does not support file imports. Two options:
- Option A: Use the TurboTax Transfer screen's guided copy-paste instructions to enter your totals
- Option B: Print or export your PDF summary and type values into TurboTax
For the guided approach:
- Go to Import / Export / Print
- Select TurboTax Transfer
- Choose TurboTax Online
- Follow the on-screen instructions to copy your totals
H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA & Others
Export your donations as PDF or CSV, then enter totals manually.
- PDF provides a printable summary organized by charity
- CSV can be opened in Excel or Google Sheets for summing
Working with a CPA or Tax Advisor
- Share your PDF export as documentation
- Send CSV for spreadsheet review
- Add your advisor to your Household (Pro) for direct access to your records

Tax Deduction Basics
Do I need to itemize to deduct donations?
For tax year 2025: generally yes. The standard deduction is $15,000 (single) / $30,000 (married filing jointly). You benefit from itemizing on your federal return only if your total deductions exceed those amounts. However, some states allow a charitable deduction even if you don't itemize on your federal return, so your donations may still reduce your state taxes.
Starting in tax year 2026: non-itemizers can also deduct a limited amount of cash donations — up to $1,000 (single) / $2,000 (married filing jointly) — without itemizing. This applies to cash gifts to public charities only; item, stock, and mileage donations remain deductible only if you itemize.
What organizations qualify?
The organization must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. DeductIt's Supporter-tier charity search verifies this for you.
- Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious organizations are automatically considered tax-exempt and qualify even without a formal 501(c)(3) determination letter.
What records do I need to keep?
- Under $250: a receipt or bank/credit card statement
- $250 or more: written acknowledgment from the charity (before filing)
- Over $500 in non-cash donations: IRS Form 8283 required
- Over $5,000 in non-cash (excluding publicly traded stock): qualified appraisal required
What is fair market value (FMV)?
The price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller. For donated items, this typically means thrift store or resale value, not the original purchase price.
DeductIt includes FMV lookup for common items based on Salvation Army and Goodwill guidelines.
Can I deduct mileage for volunteer work?
Yes, at the IRS charitable mileage rate (currently 14 cents per mile). DeductIt tracks this automatically.
What about stock or securities donations?
- Held more than one year: deduct the full fair market value without paying capital gains tax.
- Held one year or less: deduction is limited to your cost basis.
What are the AGI limits?
- Cash to public charities: 60% of adjusted gross income (AGI)
- Appreciated property: 30% of AGI
- Excess can be carried forward up to 5 years
Standard deduction vs. itemizing?
Track everything regardless. You won't know until year-end whether itemizing saves you more than the standard deduction. And starting in 2026, even non-itemizers can deduct up to $1,000 ($2,000 if married filing jointly) of cash donations, so tracking your cash giving pays off either way.
