Tax Deduction Basics
Common questions about charitable deductions.
Do I need to itemize to deduct donations?
Generally yes. The standard deduction for 2025 is $15,000 (single) / $30,000 (married filing jointly). You benefit from itemizing only if your total deductions exceed those amounts.
What organizations qualify?
The organization must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. DeductIt’s Supporter-tier charity search verifies this for you.
Churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious organizations qualify even without a formal 501(c)(3) determination letter.
What records do I need to keep?
- Under $250: a receipt or bank/credit card statement
- $250 or more: written acknowledgment from the charity (before filing)
- Over $500 in non-cash: IRS Form 8283 required
- Over $5,000 in non-cash (excluding publicly traded stock): qualified appraisal required
What is fair market value (FMV)?
The price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller. For donated items, this typically means thrift store or resale value, not the original purchase price.
DeductIt includes FMV lookup for common items based on Salvation Army and Goodwill guidelines.
Can I deduct mileage for volunteer work?
Yes, at the IRS charitable mileage rate (currently 14 cents per mile). DeductIt tracks this automatically.
What about stock or securities donations?
- Held more than one year: deduct the full fair market value without paying capital gains tax
- Held one year or less: deduction is limited to your cost basis
What are the AGI limits?
- Cash to public charities: 60% of adjusted gross income (AGI)
- Appreciated property: 30% of AGI
- Excess can be carried forward up to 5 years
Standard deduction vs. itemizing?
Track everything regardless. You won’t know until year-end whether itemizing saves you more than the standard deduction.
